Rick-rack
PhotoImpact v.11

This will show you the basic steps needed to make rick-rack in PhotoImpact. Most screenshots are reduced for faster loading.

Start by opening a 500x500 document for room to work.

Using the Path tool, Custom shape, open F147:

Draw the shape to something like this:

Duplicate this shape 3 or 4 times, being careful to line up the ends together.

Right-click;Select all Objects, then Merge as Single object.

Deselect the shape and open the Line and Arrow tool, Bezier.

Very carefully start at the top left of the shape and make clicks at the top middle of the shape and the middle center.

Follow this to the end of the shape. If you have made all the clicks in the right places, the Bezier tool will have rounded each segment in the right direction. If not, either use the Path Edit function to move the nodes or try again from the beginning.

Double click on the last node to close the shape. Change this line to 3D round.

On the toolbar, change to width to 1 and change the style to the dotted line.

Move this line to the top of the basic shape. Duplicate the line and move the duplicate to just under the first line, using either the Selection tool or the keyboard arrow keys.

Continue duplicating and moving the line to the bottom of the shape. Make as many or as few lines as you like.

When you are satisfied with your rick-rack, right-click, Select all Objects and Merge as a single object.

And there you have the basics for making rick-rack. Experiment with other shapes and types of lines for a different look.
